Shopify has recently taken a major step forward in terms of expanding its crypto wallet support by integrating with the Sign-in with Ethereum (SIWE) protocol, led by the Ethereum Name Service (ENS) and the Ethereum Foundation. SIWE provides a secure way for users to sign in and authenticate their Ethereum accounts and ENS domains without having to share their private information, such as names, phone numbers, and residential addresses, with third parties.
This move is especially significant for Shopify, as the company has faced criticism in the past for its handling of user data. In April 2022, a class-action lawsuit was filed against Shopify and hardware wallet provider Ledger due to a major data leak in 2020.
ENS Labs Community Advocate @Sadaf.eth generated excitement in the Ethereum community on February 9th when she highlighted the SIWE integration with Shopify on Twitter and linked to developer documents that explain how to incorporate the tool into Shopify stores.
By using the Statement Generator prop, merchants can alter the statement that appears in a Sign-In with an Ethereum message. This function takes the address of the wallet that has connected, allowing merchants to tailor their message statements to better reflect their brand.
By integrating the SIWE feature on Shopify wallet connect, users can now click a “sign-in with Ethereum” button to securely connect their addresses via SIWE’s partnered intermediaries such as Coinbase, Fortmatic, WalletConnect, Portis and Torus. This provides a convenient and secure way for users to access their Ethereum wallets.
